Cassi has been involved in numerous organizations to push forward rights-based education in her community and beyond. Her most notable accomplishment is founding The Open School in Santa Ana, California. This K-12 school is the first and only self-directed democratic school in Orange County, California and currently the only one in all of Southern California. In 2020, they launched an innovative virtual program to provide access to self-directed democratic education to people in all parts of the world. The Open School began operation in 2015.

To support self-directed education and advocate further for children’s rights, Cassi then founded Sprig Institute. This organization is closely tied to The Open School and offers conferences, training, and development for people interested in self-directed education or rights-based parenting. Sprig’s mission to transforming education by cultivating self-directed democratic schools and advocating for children’s rights.

Additionally, Cassi is a member of the Alliance for Self-Directed Education (ASDE) and part of a collective of self-directed democratic schools inspired by Sudbury Valley School. This collective of founders and staff share resources, hold regular Sudbury conferences, and meet virtually to strategize on how to best support students and families who choose to raise their children with full respect for their rights as humans.
